Night Patrol

Sometimes I look up at that unsettling light up in the clouds. It comes from the very thing that has divided us. Something that has so outmatched our comprehension that we have turned to the only sense of direction that remains. Our instincts. Our fear of others who are different, our fear of what we don’t understand. That’s what carries us through this chapter of history.

When I see that unearthly light I do not reflect on the triumphs and struggles that brought it into our lives. We cannot look to its corona, so we have shielded ourselves from it, funneling its terrible light into the sky. It’s a hateful thing, although I’m unsure if it’s alive. We are told to embrace it, but I won’t. It doesn’t belong here.

So I do my part as the night patrol; walking in the alien glow and hoping that one day the city may be cast in shadow again.
